How I Created a Beautiful Patio Herb Garden in One Container

If you’re short on garden space but love cooking with fresh herbs, creating a patio herb garden in a container is one of the easiest and most rewarding projects you can do.

This simple planter gives me fresh herbs all summer long and sits just steps from my kitchen door, making it easy to snip what I need for homemade pizzas, pasta dishes, salads, and more.

Why I Love Growing Herbs in Containers

  • Perfect for patios, decks, and small spaces
  • Easy to maintain
  • Looks beautiful all season
  • Fresh herbs are always within reach
  • Saves money compared to buying herbs weekly

Supplies I Used

  • Large planter
  • Potting soil
  • Garden soil blend
  • Organic garden mix
  • Gardening gloves
  • Watering can
  • Basil seeds

Step 1: Start With Good Drainage

I begin by adding a layer of gravel to the bottom of my planter. This helps improve drainage and keeps the roots healthy throughout the growing season.

Step 2: Add Fresh Soil

I reused some soil from an older container and mixed it with fresh garden soil and organic garden mix to give the herbs plenty of nutrients.

Step 3: Plant Your Herbs

For this container I planted:

๐ŸŒฟ Lavender
๐ŸŒฟ Rosemary
๐ŸŒฟ Thyme
๐ŸŒฟ Oregano
๐ŸŒฟ Parsley
๐ŸŒฟ Cilantro
๐ŸŒฟ Basil

Together they create a beautiful mix of texture, fragrance, and color.

My Favorite Basil Trick

One thing I do every year is sprinkle basil seeds around the perimeter of the planter.

As they germinate, the basil fills in naturally and creates a lush, overflowing look while providing even more herbs for cooking.

Herb Garden Care Tips

  • Water when the top inch of soil feels dry.
  • Place in a sunny location with at least 6 hours of sun.
  • Harvest regularly to encourage new growth.
  • Remove flower buds from basil to keep leaves producing.

Frequently Asked Questions
