Hydrangeas are one of the most rewarding shrubs you can grow, but choosing the right variety and planting location makes all the difference.
1. Choose the Right Hydrangea for Your Space
Before buying, ask yourself:
☀️ How much sun does the area receive?
πΏ How much room does the shrub have to grow?
❄️ What is your growing zone?
My favourite beginner-friendly hydrangeas:
Limelight
Little Lime
Strawberry Vanilla
Bobo
Fire Light
2. Planting Tips
Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball.
Mix quality garden soil into your existing soil.
Water deeply after planting.
Add mulch around the base to help retain moisture.
3. Watering
Hydrangeas love consistent moisture.
✔ Water deeply 1–2 times per week.
✔ Water more frequently during extreme heat.
✔ Avoid shallow daily watering.
4. Fertilizing
I keep it simple:
✔ Apply a slow-release fertilizer in spring.
✔ Add compost annually.
✔ Avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to fewer blooms.
5. Pruning
Many panicle hydrangeas bloom on new wood.
✔ Prune in late winter or early spring.
✔ Remove dead or damaged branches.
✔ Don't be afraid to reduce the size if needed.
